Françoise Gilot is probably best known as Picasso’s romantic partner for ten years. I, however, prefer to remember her as a talented and thoughtful artist. Spring is one of a set of four aquatints she created to represent the four seasons. I love the way the figure occupies the space in the print, and the rhythms of the hair as it wraps around her body. The still life reflects the playful liveliness of the print and conveys the joy of the season.

This aquatint, along with Frank Mason’s Seascape, were both created in the 1970s when I was studying at the Art Students League.
